Dear Dani Grant School of Dance family,

We are very excited to announce this year's Choreographic Competition!

Our students have been training so hard and learn so much over the years in their ballet classes but they never get the opportunity to share their own creative ideas with a big audience outside their classroom. This year we decided it is time to give our dancers the chance to choreograph a music of their choice with a theme of their choice and we shall honour them by admiring their hard work to create and costume a piece.

Date: SATURDAY 6TH APRIL 2019

Time: 3:00pm - 5:30pm

Venue: Highfield Hall, 320 Carshalton Road, Carshalton, Sutton, SM5 3QB

Young Ballerinas

Please ensure that you complete the enrolment form for each child by

SATURDAY 16th MARCH 2019.

Please also pay particular attention to the photograph consent at the bottom of the form and indicate your consent preference.

Genre: The choreography must be of classical or neoclassical ballet or contemporary style.

Age groups: All students from grade 2 and above are invited to enter the competition.

Numbers: Our young choreographers can perform a group* piece from 3 dancers or more, a duet (2 dancers) or a solo

Time: The duration of the piece depends on the number of dancers

  • Solo: 1min 30 sec max

  • Duet: 2min max

  • *Group: 2min 30sec max

*Please be aware that a group category will only be permitted if of popular demand and the number of entries. If we don’t have enough entries for group numbers dancers may perform their piece but duets and solos will be in the same category.

Costumes: choreographers are expected to provide their own costumes. These can be as simple or creative as possible. There are no limits. However, please avoid messy props such as feathers. For further help and advice  please speak to your teacher.

Rehearsals: Rehearsals are to take place at their dancers own time. However, teachers would be happy to give 5-10 minutes of their class when possible to watch, supervise and give artistic opinion in regards to the choreographic progress.

Video photography filming:

This is an excellent opportunity for the young dancers and choreographers to document their own work. Please make sure you fill in the appropriate consent form when handing in your application below. If choreographers do not wish to film their piece please as an audience respect their wishes.

The material taken is for personal use only and it is not to be published in social media. GCSE students who wish to document their piece for portfolio purposes are very welcome to do so.

Participation fee: £5 per entry/dance

Dress rehearsal: The day of the competition from 3:00pm onwards with the show starting at 4:00pm
