Dani Grant School of Dance Child Protection Policy

1. Introduction

Dani Grant School of Dance is dedicated to providing a safe, inclusive, and nurturing environment for all children and young people attending our classes. We believe that the welfare of every child is paramount, and we are committed to safeguarding and protecting them from harm, abuse, and exploitation.

This policy outlines our commitment to child protection and the procedures we follow in line with UK safeguarding legislation and best practices.

2. Purpose

The purpose of this policy is to:

• Ensure the safety and well-being of all children in our care.

• Provide clear guidelines for staff, volunteers, parents, and students on safeguarding responsibilities.

• Establish a clear process for reporting and responding to safeguarding concerns.

3. Legal Framework

This policy aligns with:

• Children Act 1989 & 2004

• Working Together to Safeguard Children (2018)

• Keeping Children Safe in Education (2021)

4. Key Principles

1. Child Welfare is Paramount – The safety and well-being of children always come first.

2. Safeguarding is Everyone’s Responsibility – All staff, volunteers, parents, and students play a role in child protection.

3. Safe Recruitment – Staff and volunteers undergo thorough background checks, including DBS checks and reference verification.

4. Training & Awareness – All staff and volunteers receive regular child protection training.

5. Confidentiality – Safeguarding concerns are handled sensitively and shared only with appropriate authorities.

6. Clear Codes of Conduct – Expectations for staff, volunteers, parents, and students ensure a safe environment.

7. Safe Environment – We regularly assess our premises to maintain a secure, child-friendly setting.

5. Recognising Abuse

Abuse can take various forms:

• Physical Abuse – Hitting, shaking, or causing harm.

• Emotional Abuse – Bullying, threats, or persistent emotional mistreatment.

• Sexual Abuse – Inappropriate touching or exploitation.

• Neglect – Failing to meet a child’s basic needs.

Possible signs of abuse:

• Unexplained injuries or frequent bruising.

• Sudden changes in behaviour, withdrawal, or anxiety.

• Fear of going home or reluctance to participate in activities.

6. Responding to Disclosures

If a child discloses abuse:

Listen carefully – Do not interrupt or ask leading questions.

Reassure the child – Let them know they have done the right thing by speaking up.

Do not promise confidentiality – Explain that the information must be shared to ensure their safety.

Record and Report – Write down what was said as accurately as possible and inform the Designated Safeguarding Lead (DSL) immediately.

7. Reporting Procedures

• All concerns must be reported to the DSL or Deputy DSL immediately.

• The DSL will assess the information and take appropriate action, which may involve contacting children’s social care or the police.

• If the concern involves immediate danger, emergency services must be contacted.

8. Allegations Against Staff

• Any allegations against staff or volunteers must be reported to the DSL immediately.

• The DSL will follow safeguarding procedures, ensuring a fair and thorough investigation.

• If an allegation involves the DSL, concerns should be reported to an external safeguarding authority.

9. Record Keeping

• Accurate and detailed records of concerns, disclosures, and actions taken will be securely maintained.

• Records will comply with data protection legislation and only be shared with appropriate authorities.

10. Parental Consent & Communication

• Written parental consent will be obtained for activities beyond normal dance classes.

• Parents/carers will be informed of significant safeguarding concerns, unless doing so would place the child at greater risk.

11. Multi-Agency Approach

• We will work collaboratively with external safeguarding agencies, including children’s social care, law enforcement, and other relevant organisations.

12. Policy Review & Monitoring

• This policy will be reviewed annually and updated as necessary to remain effective and compliant with legislation.

• Regular audits will be conducted to ensure compliance and effectiveness.

For any concerns or questions regarding this policy, please contact the Designated Safeguarding Lead (DSL) at Dani Grant School of Dance.
