  • What is character dance?
Character is a theatrical and stylised representation of traditional folk or national dances, predominantly from European origins such as Hungary, Russia, and Poland. It is an integral part within the RAD ballet grades; enriches students' understanding of dance styles and musicality, broadens their expressive repertoire, and enhances their performance skills. By incorporating these diverse dance traditions, students gain a comprehensive education that not only improves their technical proficiency in ballet but also cultivates a deeper appreciation of cultural dance forms.
  • Which grade is character dance studied?
Students begin learning character dance in Grade 1 and continue to advance their skills through the higher grades. Like the classical training, it's introduced progressively, with increasing complexity and technique, to ensure students develop a solid foundation before moving on to more advanced levels.
  • When can my child begin pointe work?
Typically, students are considered for pointe work after they have completed several years of consistent ballet training. Most importantly, students must be at least 11 years old and have developed the necessary strength, technique, and physical maturity. Before starting pointe work, each student's readiness will be assessed by our experienced ballet teachers through a comprehensive evaluation process, including an assessment of ankle strength, core stability, and overall alignment. Our goal is to foster a safe and supportive environment where each dancer can progress at their own pace, minimising the risk of injury and promoting long-term success.
